The Year of Great Divide, 1921, saw a major increase in population. It was regarded as the demographic divide for the reason that it brought along a constant rise in the population of India from about 5.9% to about 14%. It has been going on increasingly after that.

The year 2020, instead of bringing progress and prosperity, brought a big shock for the whole world. The deadly coronavirus spread rapidly among the people resulting in a worldwide lockdown. This virus took away many lives that ultimately forced the people to stay indoors for almost six months. This period was very stressful for a large group of people. Many people lost their jobs due to the recession that followed after lockdown, many businesses stopped their operations and several small-scale businesses shut down. All this created havoc among the world population.

COVID-19 and Less Fertile Women

Though these months were a bit too stressful for the people, the lockdown brought many people closer. Spending more time with family enhanced the love, care, and respect they had for each other. COVID-19 also proved to be a blessing-in-disguise for the less fertile women. The women who were trying to conceive for a long time (since years), experienced pregnancy in 2020 – all thanks to the lockdown! The reasons that led to the fertility of these women can be as follows:

More Time Together: Many couples were not able to spend much time together due to their busy work-life schedules, especially the ones who belonged to double income groups, i.e., both husband and wife are earning. Such couples got to spend quality time together during the lockdown which resulted in a miracle. The main reasons for sub-fertility were not getting enough time for each other and panic due to the growing age. The lockdown became a blessing for the couples and finally, they could conceive.

A Healthy Body: A huge number of people took the advantage of the lockdown period and worked on themselves and their bodies. The increasing COVID-19 threat forced people to change their lifestyle and eating habits. People now preferred more home-cooked food rather than outside food. They opted for healthy eating habits which are very essential for a couple who are Contemporary Issues of the Modern World looking to conceive. Regular exercises, regular recreation time, less exposure to pollutants, better mental health due to the absence of office politics, etc., contributed to the process of conceiving. A healthy body plays an important role in the fertility process.

Improved Hormonal Health: During the lockdown, the quality time spent with partners and improved health conditions resulted in healthy hormonal health in couples. There was a decline in hypertension, diabetes, and stress among couples which lead to an improved hormonal milieu of the body and better fertility.

Many couples were successful in conceiving during the lockdown and this ultimately led to a sudden rise in the number of global births. According to UNICEF, approximately 3.7 lakh babies were born on 1st January 2021. India itself recorded 60,000 births which were the highest among other countries of the world. The year 2020 left many people hurt and stressed but also became a blessing for several couples, especially the ones who were wishing to start a family with their partners for a very long time. Like the year 1921, 2020 also has the potential to be called ‘The Year of Great Divide’.
